Cave Rock/Kelley Graveyard

Graveyard Hill

Bishop-Kelly Cemetery

This cemetery or grave yard name varies depending on who has done research or has relatives buried there. The cemetery is on private property. It is located on the hill on Route 651 known as Stoney Battery Road in Troutville.

The markers that are made from sandstone have been worn and faded over the years because of acid rain. A rock was noted with initials G. W. M. 1717, Thomas Kelly died September 15, 1827. Additionally, Civil War era burials found include John Harper, Joel Harper, Henry Kelly, and John Bishop. The Botetourt Genealogy Club has identified about 20 of the unmarked gravesites through research of records, obituaries, and death certificates.

Sir names found to date include Basham, Bishop, Harper, Kelley, Kelly, Morris, Patsel, Stone, Trent, and Troutman. Based on the club’s research, most of the people buried here seem to have a family relationship, with the exception of Basham, who according to obituaries were church members at Cave Rock Church. The Trent, Harper, Kelly, and Bishop families intermarried.
