Gallery by the James in Buchanan will host a woodworking exhibit by artisan Alan Smith of Roanoke beginning on Saturday, August 17, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., with a special reception at 2 p.m. The show will continue through September 7.
Smith uses a combination of Virginia hardwoods with exotic accent woods in their natural colors for his creations. The exhibit will include many useful and practical pieces, as well as more artistic wood creations and wood sculpture.
Smith’s woodworking reflects his many years of teaching and working with wood. Smith grew up in Southwest Michigan, taught vocational woodworking from 1971 to 1973 in the Peace Corps, and taught Industrial Arts in Frankenmuth, Mich. for 31 years. Smith has been a woodworking artisan since 2004 and moved to Roanoke in 2010.
The quality of woodworking offered in this exhibit is sure to be of great interest to the rural Botetourt/Roanoke area.
Gallery by the James is located at 19827 Main Street, Buchanan.
