George Edward Lee, 86, died Thursday, June 2, at the Forestville Rehabilitation Center in Forestville, Md.
He was born near Eagle Rock on May 18, 1936, the youngest child of James and Georgianna Lee. His twin brother died at birth. His older siblings were brothers Norvel and James, and sister Edna.
After attending segregated elementary and high school in Botetourt and Alleghany Counties, he worked at the railroad in Clifton Forge and drove a school bus for Botetourt County Schools before enlisting in the U.S. Army.
After his enlistment he settled in Washington, D.C. and worked in commercial construction. Coached by his brother, Olympic gold medalist Norvel Lee, he was also an amateur boxer in the early 1960s.
Pre-deceasing him are his parents, his brothers, and his sister. He is survived by his son, Ken Floyd of Oxon Hill, Md., and numerous cousins, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Beginning July 1, in honor of the remarkable accomplishments of George Lee’s oldest brother, the northern portion of US 220 in Botetourt County will be designated the Norvel LaFallette Ray Lee Memorial Highway.
