The James River girls will host undefeated Glenvar in soccer tonight in Springwood. Game time is 7 p.m. as the girls look to drop the visiting Highlanders from the ranks of the unbeaten.

In the past week the Knights split two Three Rivers District games, defeating Alleghany but falling to Carroll County. With those results River is 3-3 in the district and 5-6-1 overall.

Last Thursday in Springwood the Knights shut out Alleghany, 4-0. Konner Myers scored a first half goal to give River a lead at the half and the Knights put three more on the board after intermission. Myers hit another deep shot in the back corner, then Victoria Race-Waller scored off an assist from Ella Monaghan. Myers completed a hat trick with a third unassisted goal from outside for the final tally. Kylee Aaron and Chloe Helmandollar shared the James River goal and had a quiet evening.

On Monday in Hillsville host Carroll County took a 4-1 win over the Knights. Cavalier senior Ashlyn Newman scored two goals in the first half to give Carroll the early lead. River’s Rhaya Kitt, after a few strong attacking runs, broke past the Carroll defense and was denied a goal by a foul in the penalty area.  Myers scored on the resulting penalty kit with three minutes remaining in the period and Carroll led 2-1 at the half.

The second period favored the home team in possession and in attacking opportunities as Newman scored twice more for four goals on the night. Aaron limited the second half damage with a couple of spectacular saves for the Knights, but it was not enough.
