The Glenvar High soccer teams appear to be the favorites in the Three Rivers District at this point of the season after beating both James River teams by decisive scores last week. The girls dropped a 6-1 decision to the Highlanders at Glenvar and the boys lost at Springwood, 6-0.
“It was a tough loss that didn’t need to be so bad, but they were clearly the better team that night,” said River girls coach Bill Smith. “The Glenvar coach, Kyleigh Drew, played for me for a few years on my club team. She is a great kid and doing well in her first season at Glenvar.”
After a busy 10 minutes of relatively balanced play the Highlanders’ Jules Stanley let loose with some offensive power, scoring four goals in 10 minutes. Late in the half River captain Kayla Myers scored unassisted for the Knights.
Myers was a force in the midfield, making several opportunities, but some poor luck and good defense kept the ball out of the Highlander net for the most part. The Knights, despite being well behind, fought on to the end and Kylee Aaron had 18 saves in the goal for River.
In Springwood, Glenvar scored three goals in each half as the River boys took a loss. Glenvar had the ball in River’s end for a good portion of the game as the Highlanders remained undefeated on the season.
Both River teams were scheduled to host Auburn on Monday of this week but those games were rained out. Next Monday the girls will host Alleghany and the boys will take on the Mountaineers in Low Moor.
