Greenfield is site for Blue Ridge District cross country today; Lord Botetourt, James River post good times in Metro meet

Greenfield Recreation Park in Botetourt County will be the site of the Blue Ridge District cross country meet today. The boys will kick things off at 4:30 p.m. with the girls to follow.

The Lord Botetourt and James River teams wrapped up the regular season last week as they competed in the annual Metro Cross Country Meet in Blacksburg. The host Bruins won the boys title and Rockbridge edged Blacksburg to win the girls title.

Blacksburg scored 42 points to take first among 21 schools with teams competing in the boys meet. Cave Spring was second with 97 points while Lord Botetourt took ninth with 265 and James River was 13th with 350.

Senior Nathan Atchue of Franklin County was the individual boys winner with a time of 16:19 in the 5K race, beating second place Conner Rutherford of Blacksburg by 17 seconds. Lord Botetourt senior Cole Stelter medaled with a 13th place finish in 17:45. Also scoring for the Cavaliers were Carter Hudson in 28th, Tristan Marshall in 67th, Landon Hayes in 87th and Jonah Clark in 95th. There were 188 boys who finished the race.

James River’s top finisher was Michael Jorgensen, who ran a time of 18:10 for 18th place. Also scoring for the Knights were John Laughridge in 63rd, Ryan Steger in 80th, Silas Miller in 104th and Silas Whitson in 126th place.

For the girls, Rockbridge edged Blacksburg, 35-42, to win the team title with Salem third with 140 points. LB was eighth among 13 teams and James River did not have a full team.

Kerrigan Chaney, a sophomore from North Cross School, won the girls individual title with a time of 19:20, beating Reese Bradbury of Blacksburg by 32 seconds. LB’s best time was 23:13 by senior Hatlyn Haggerty, who finished 32nd among 129 competitors. Also scoring for LB were Alexa Carillo in 47th, Elizabeth Meadows in 56th, Amelia Dietrich in 61st and Falan Peters in 70th place.

James River had four individuals in the race, topped by Georgia Miller in 59th place. Also finishing were Anna Davidson in 89th, Jacmyn Rinehart in 90th and Madeline Rutledge in 98th.

Region meets will be held next week. The Region 2C meet will be at Green Hill Park in Roanoke while the Region 3D meet is at Smith River Sports Complex on Thursday, November 3.
