May 13, 1945 – June 12, 2026

John William “Billy” Griffin went home to the Lord on Friday, June 12, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.

He was born on May 13, 1945, to John Thomas and Geneva Phelps Griffin.

In his early years, John lived out a childhood dream of being a truck driver. Driving for UPS, he earned multiple awards before retiring after 25 years. He is perhaps better known for his second career of building and developing. Over the span of 45 years, he built many homes and subdivisions in the Botetourt County area.

John Griffin is a descendant of an old Botetourt County family. His unique talents and abilities afforded him regard and esteem throughout his phases of business and social circles. A man of impeccable character and values, he was a respected member of the community. Always able to empathize with those who came to him for guidance or help. His warm personality, sharp wit and kind words who always saw the best in everybody made him a good friend to everyone around him.

John also served on numerous boards within the county including the Board of Equalization, Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and Economic Development Authority. As a member of these boards, he welcomed and enjoyed the opportunity to help shape the future of the county where he was raised and called home.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Delores Jean Griffin.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, John Michael and David Scott Griffin; his daughter-in-law, Nicole Griffin; and two granddaughters, Olivia Nicole and Meredith Anne Griffin.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Oakey’s East Chapel with Pastor Kevin Cummings officiating. Interment will follow at Daleville Cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Oakey’s East Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Condolences may be shared with his family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.

Arrangements entrusted to Oakey’s East Chapel, 540-977-3909.
