Cord Hall

Christiansburg Town Councilman Cord Hall has broken his silence and said he will not seek re-election this fall. There had been speculation about the announcement, but Hall had not publicly said anything over the past month. Tuesday night, he told members of town council that he had been content with his time on the governmental body and his seat would be open this November.

“This is not a decision the I reached easily,” he said. “But now is the time to step down.”

Hall joined council in 2010 and is completing his second term. Over the years, he has been very active with the town’s recreation department and was instrumental in the town purchasing 70 acres of land along Pepper’s Ferry Road for a future town park.

He cited both professional and family reasons for not continuing in the public eye.

“I had knocked it around for a while, and it’s time for me to step aside,” Hall said.

Hall is an attorney and his oldest daughter just entered college. His family was supportive on the decision. He has represented council on the recreation advisory committee for the past six years.

Several council members called it a sad day for the town and the council as a whole. Brad Stipes said Hall has been very important to the town over the past eight years especially when it comes to recreation.

Henry Showalter added that Hall had been a juggernaut on council and had brought a lot of experience to the post.

Two other councilmen, Steve Huppert and Brad Stipes, are seeking re-election this November.

With Hall’s departure, there will be an open seat on the governmental body. Two newcomers, Jonathan Taylor and Merissa Sachs, have gotten enough signatures to be on the ballot.

Hall has also turned in enough signatures to run for council, but has requested his name be removed from the ballot because of his recent decision.
