Lord Botetourt junior Ashton Harper shot a six-under-par 29 over the first nine holes at Hanging Rock last week to increase his lead in the season-long Blue Ridge District golf standings. The Cavaliers also widened their lead as a team.
Harper had four birdies and an eagle over the first seven holes at Hanging Rock before shooting par on eight and nine. He drove the green and one-putted on the fourth hole for an eagle two. He then birdied the next three holes to leave the competition behind.
Botetourt shot 142 as a team with Dylan Salvi carding 36, Jake Koffman 38 and a 39 by Samir Davidov. Also playing for LB, but not in the scoring top four, were Cole Leavens with 43 and Cayden Bowles with a 45.
Teamwise, Northside was close behind LB with a four-man 145. Two Vikings tied for second individually, Peyton Spangler and Nick Crawford, both with 33. William Byrd was third at Hanging Rock with 165, Franklin County had 171 and Staunton River shot 222.
LB now leads Northside by 14 strokes in the overall competition, 294-308. Franklin County held on to third at 337, Byrd is close behind at 339 and Staunton River stands at 453 after two rounds of nine.
“Northside played really well,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “We’re only up 14 with lots of golf to play.”
Individually, Harper has a solid lead with Spangler second and Davidov third. Salvi is fourth, Crawford is fifth and Koffman is now sixth.
Harper is seven under par after 18 holes. Ashton is the only golfer under par after two rounds, with Northside’s Spangler sitting at even par.
The BRD was set to play at Blue Hills on Tuesday of this week, and next Tuesday they go to Mariners’ Landing.
