The historic Breckinridge Law Office and Western Hotel (LOH) building in Fincastle was officially demolished last Thursday, marking the end of a months-long discussion over the future of one of Botetourt County’s most recognizable 19th-century structures.
Once considered for preservation or relocation, the building had been deemed structurally unsound, with internal brickwork crumbling beyond repair. County officials ultimately approved demolition after determining that neither stabilization nor a move was feasible. The decision was reached following engineering assessments and public meetings, during which the building’s fragile condition was compared to trying to “move a sandcastle.”
On Thursday, a town official described the demolition of the hotel as a giant “dust cloud,” adding credence to what was initially discovered when the county and town discussed the physical move of the buildings.
Plans are now underway to construct historically accurate replicas on the original site using salvaged materials from the old structure. The new buildings are expected to reflect the look and feel of the originals and will serve as part of the larger courthouse square redevelopment. A community advisory group will help guide the design and use of the reconstructed space, ensuring the site remains connected to its historical roots while accommodating modern needs.
Though the original building is gone, officials and preservation advocates say its legacy will live on through thoughtful reconstruction and continued public engagement.
