Robert Boyd Hundley passed away on July 1, 2026, on the family farm he loved in Botetourt County, Eagle Rock. A lifelong Virginian, his years were filled with animals, especially horses, along with his constant canine companions happily tagging along.
Robert and his three siblings shared a rich heritage that shaped his love of land, culture, history, and family adventures.
He was a graduate of James River High School and attended Dabney Lancaster Community College before working for Westvaco in Covington. Like his father, as a member of Scout Troop 2 in Clifton Forge, Robert earned the honors of Eagle Scout, God and Country, and the Order of the Arrow awards. Robert loved football, was known to tackle with abandon, and was selected to the first-team, all-district, as a linebacker. His passion for history eventually led him to memorize chapters of his favorite stories, including Lonesome Dove, Will Rogers, and speeches by Senator Davy Crocket, to the astonishment of his lucky audience. Hunting, horseback riding, and living off the verdant land became his way of life.
He is survived by his son, Robert Boyd Hundley, Jr.; with his parents, Raymond E. and Faye A. Hundley, predeceasing him. Robert also leaves his three beautiful granddaughters (Boulder, Colo.). His siblings are Ridge Hundley (Va., Fla.), Stephen Hundley (Mt.), and Melissa Hundley, Clifton Forge.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, at 11 a.m. at the Fincastle Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Dickerson is presiding.
Memorial gifts may be sent to the Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, Scout 2 in Clifton Forge, or the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Any correspondence may be sent to Steve Hundley, P.O. Box 1541, Ennis, MT 59729.
