Floyd County and Patrick County qualified for the state Class 2 golf tournament and James River finished fifth among a dozen teams at the Region 2C tournament Monday. The tournament was held at the Olde Mill Golf Club in Carroll County.

River shot a team total of 369, which was 30 strokes behind the leader and 20 strokes more than what they needed to qualify. The top two teams advance to the state and Patrick County was second with 349. Fellow Three Rivers District member Floyd won the tournament with a team score of 339.

Ryan Steger led River with an 87, followed by Silas Miller at 88. Both Knights were named to the second team All-Region 2C. Also scoring were Dylan Hicks at 97 and Joey Schroeder at 99. Heath Andrews carded a 108 and Lacey Kessler came in at 110. Medalist in the tournament was Jalen Hagwood of Patrick County, who shot 79.

“It was not our best outing,” said River coach Donna Cox. “I was hoping for a better turnout, but it has been a great season and a really fun group to watch. I’m looking forward to the golfers that will be returning. They work so hard and that work will pay off.”
