Jeremy Sink, a 1999 graduate of James River High School, has been named the new athletic director at Class 4 Jefferson Forest High School. Sink will replace outgoing AD Jedd Zaring, who is retiring.
Sink played football, basketball and baseball during his days at James River, then went on to play baseball at Lynchburg College. He graduated in 2004 from what is now the University of Lynchburg.
Sink leaves his position as a teacher and baseball coach at Liberty High School in Bedford. Sink, 40, has been at Liberty since 2018 after spending a year as an assistant at Lynchburg. He has 19 years of coaching experience, including stints at E.C. Glass, Rockbridge County, Cave Spring, Potomac Falls and his alma mater, James River. He also served as coach of the summer Roanoke Rails baseball team. Between middle school and high school sports, American Legion, Roanoke Rails, and NCAA Division 3 baseball at Lynchburg, Jeremy has been involved in 53 total seasons of coaching.
“Ultimately, I’ve had aspirations of becoming an athletic director at some point in my career but when opportunity knocks, you answer the door,” said Sink. “I thought it might be a little further down the road, but I’ve coached 19 straight years, most of which included multiple sports.”
Sink lives in Forest, just a five-minute commute to his new job. He has a wife and two children who will eventually be attending school there.
“My kids are still young but they are getting more involved in their interests every year, so I definitely wanted the time to be able to be there at their events whenever possible,” he said. “I like the thought of being around my two kids throughout the day during their teen years while at Jefferson Forest High, plus we already live in Forest. Those two things along with having the opportunity to obtain a 12-month contract and what that does financially for our family was too much to pass on, even though I still enjoyed coaching.”
Sink will be missed at Liberty, where he taught personal finance and physical education. He filled a vacant assistant coaching position on the girls basketball team, served as a PA announcer, helped out the track & field team by assisting a hearing impaired athlete and hosted baseball clinics.
At Jefferson Forest, Sink will oversee a program that features 20 athletic activities, with most sports offering JV and varsity teams.
“I look forward to getting to work and putting my own spin on a very well-established athletic and activities program here at Jefferson Forest,” he said. “This area is booming and there’s over 1,400 kids in the school along with 20 some sports. I’m excited for the challenge and to continue showing that with commitment and a strong work ethic, anything is possible.”
