The James River and Lord Botetourt track teams will be busy this week at various events. The Cavaliers will head to Philadelphia Wednesday to compete in the prestigious Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field through Friday, then head to Charlotte for the Distance Carnival. James River will be among close to 30 schools competing in the 14th annual Knights Track Classic at Cave Spring High School Saturday.
The first events at Cave Spring will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through most of the day. This is one of the biggest local meets of the season. In addition to James River and host Cave Spring the following schools are scheduled to attend: Auburn, Blacksburg, Bruton, Carroll County, Christian Heritage Academy, Christiansburg, Eastern Montgomery, Fort Defiance, Galileo Magnet, Glenvar, Heritage (Lynchburg), Hidden Valley, Narrows, North Cross, Parry McCluer, Patrick Henry, Pulaski County, Radford, Roanoke Catholic, Roanoke Valley Christian, Salem, Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy, Staunton River, Stuarts Draft, Waynesboro and Western Albemarle.
River competed in the Titan Track Classic at Hidden Valley High last Saturday. For the River boys, Jayden Alston won the shot put at 44’4” and Jack Beheler won the discus at 142’10”. Alston was third in the discus. In the running events Braden Jones was fourth in the 800 meters.
For the girls, Kaia Binns took third in the 100 meters and Denver Rinehart was sixth. Rinehart also took fifth in the 400, Binns was seventh in the 200 and the 4×100 relay team was fifth. In the shot put Samaya Osborne was fourth, Gretchen Huffman was sixth and Ella Hutchens was ninth.
The Knights are also scheduled to attend a meet at Glenvar High School today. All of the Three Rivers District schools are expected to attend.
LB competed in the Blue & Gold High School Track Classic in Emory last Saturday, held at Emory & Henry College. For the girls Jillian Harris placed won the 100m hurdles and also placed second in triple jump, qualifying for states. Morgan Wilmer placed eighth in the 200m and the girls 4×100 of Janai Compton, Ratie Jensen, Harris and Morgan Wilmer was third.
The girls 4×200 placed second with the foursome of Compton, Madeleine Gantzhorn, Annalise Coon and Analise Buyos. Abby Perkey took fifth in the shot put.
In the boys’ meet, Eric Duncan won the 3,200 and was second in the 1,600. Caleb Miller won the 110 hurdles and Tristan Graves placed third. Graves was second in the 300m hurdles and Quinton Jones placed eighth in the 300m.
In pole vault Owen Hilgers placed seventh and Brody Wilhoit was eighth. The boys’ 4×100 relay placed fourth and the 4×200 was eighth.
