John Gregg Stump Sr., 69, of Fincastle, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2022.

Gregg was born on Feb. 8, 1952, in Beckley, W.Va., and was the son of the late James Hilliard Stump and Wilma Jean Hefner Stump.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pamela Ferris Stump; two sons, John Gregg Stump Jr. (Linni) of Roanoke, Matthew Todd Stump (Meagan) of Fincastle; only daughter, Carrie Michelle Stump of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Elliott, Amelia, Flora, and soon to arrive baby Leo. In addition, he has one brother, James Arthur Stump (Pamela) of Roanoke, and numerous nieces and cousins, as well as his four-legged buddy, Duke.

Gregg was a graduate of William Fleming High School. Shortly after, Gregg, his brother and their father started S&S Motors in Cloverdale. He was employed there until beginning a 16-year career at Magic City Ford, where he worked as a salesman and later as a new and used car sales manager. In the 1990s, Gregg returned to being self-employed at various businesses in Botetourt County: Tinkerview Swim Club, Fincastle Motors, Fincastle Mulch & Stone, and The Virginian Markette. After retiring from ownership of the country convenience store, he assumed the full time position as Duke’s head dog sitter. He was a member of Wheatland Lutheran Church, Lakeland Masonic Lodge 190, Roanoke Valley Scottish Rite, and Kazim Shriners. He had a lifelong passion for fishing, and could often be found spending time by the James River in Eagle Rock with his family and friends.

A small private funeral was held by the family; however, a public celebration of life, as he requested, will occur in the spring/summer to celebrate Gregg socially and joyously on the James River in Eagle Rock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Botetourt County Fire & EMS, 205 N. Roanoke Street, Suite 1, Fincastle, 24090. Online condolences can be made at botetourtfuneralhome.com or 540-254-3000.
