James River will be home tonight when the two county girls soccer teams meet head to head for the second time this season. LB won the first game, 2-1, in Daleville.

The Knights gave the Cavaliers all they could handle in the previous game, and the Cavaliers are still undefeated after winning one and tying two games last week. The Cavaliers are 4-0-2.

Botetourt started off the week strong with a 5-0 win over William Byrd. Mary-Randall Plunkett, Alexis Borovich, Sophie Barranco, Kayla Olson and Heather Finley all scored goals. Borovich, Mackenzie Collins, Briana Myers and Kayla Olsen had assists.

On Wednesday of last week, Botetourt hosted Franklin County and battled to a 1-1 tie. Finley had the only goal for the Cavs.

Then on Friday in Daleville, visiting Staunton River came to town and earned a 1-1 tie with LB. Sidney Keyes had LB’s goal in that one.

Meanwhile, James River has not lost since the first game with LB. The Knights improved to 3-1-0 with an 8-0 shutout of Alleghany last week in a game called after 60 minutes.

Kaitlyn McClung started off the scoring, assisted by Morgan Bryan 12 minutes into the match.  Emma Butler, carrying the ball from the back, scored the second goal at the midpoint of the half unassisted. The last goal of the half came as a header by freshman Morgan Marshall off a lofted cross from defender Brook Ford.

The second half started with more intensity, as McClung notched two goals in the opening minute of the period, assisted by Megan Hill and Morgan Bryan. Bryan scored one for herself at the 10-minute mark assisted by Butler. Two minutes later McClung nailed her fourth goal of the match, assisted by Hill. Stephanie Vasquez finished the scoring for the Knights, assisted by Butler, with five minutes remaining in the shortened match. Colleen Peery and Haley Meadows made two saves each for James River.

River was scheduled to play Radford on Monday of this week but that game was postponed due to poor field conditions and rescheduled for May 1. The Knights are at Floyd on Thursday.

Lord Botetourt will host Northside in a Blue Ridge District match on Friday in Daleville. It will be the first meeting of the year between the two rivals.
