The Lord Botetourt boys will be looking for their first basketball win this weekend when they travel to Alleghany County for a tournament, weather permitting. The Cavaliers will play Rocktown on Friday at 6 p.m. at Alleghany High School, and the JV team will play at 7:30 p.m. at Covington Middle School. The times for Saturday are determined by Friday’s results.
The Cavaliers opened last week and dropped two games. Their season opener was Wednesday at Jefferson Forest and the host team took a 71-47 victory.
“We played them well in the first half, especially in the second quarter right before halftime,” said LB coach Josh Aliveto. “We came out cold during the third quarter and they controlled the pace for the rest of the game.”
Brady Kish led the Cavaliers with 14 points and Landon Gray had a dozen. Jefferson Forest controlled the boards.
“Rebounding has to continue to be one of our priorities,” said Aliveto. “We got in a hole early because of their second chance points in the first quarter.”
The Cavaliers’ Friday game at Pulaski was moved to Saturday afternoon due to the weather and the host Cougars pulled out a 62-58 win. The Cavaliers were as cold as the weather outside.
“I liked what I saw with our effort and overall team rebounding in this game. However, we were extremely cold from the floor and free-throw line,” said Aliveto. “We shot 52 percent from the free throw line, where we have been around the 70 percent mark through the scrimmages and first game. I do not doubt that, as a team, we will definitely see better shooting nights, or afternoons, in the future.”
Rylan Lavinder returned to the lineup and led LB with 17 points. Jairdan Pennix scored 12 points and Landon Gray had another double-digit night with 10 points.
The Cavs were scheduled to host Jefferson Forest on Monday of this week but that game was postponed due to the snowstorm.
