The Lord Botetourt girls are in Moneta tonight to take on Staunton River for the Blue Ridge District tournament championship. LB earned a spot in the championship game with a win over William Fleming in the semifinal round Monday night in Daleville.
Tonight’s game won’t be easy. Staunton River has one of the top teams in the area and has already won the BRD regular season title and the second seed for the Region 3D tournament. The Golden Eagles come into tonight’s game at 22-0.
LB beat Fleming by very similar scores to end the regular season and open the tournament season. Last week in Roanoke the Cavaliers took a 50-42 win over Fleming as Taylor Orange had 17 points, Gracie Huffard had 11, Ally Spangler had 10 and Ainsley Anderson had 10 points and eight assists.
Monday in Daleville, Fleming scored 42 again but LB had four more than last week for a 54-42 victory. Spangler led with 21, Orange had 13 and Huffard had eight points and a dozen boards.
“Both games were sloppy with too many turnovers,” said LB coach Renee Favaro. “In both contests we missed a lot of layups, but made enough runs to pull away with wins. We are happy to be moving on and playing for the BRD championship.”
Next week Lord Botetourt, now 18-5, is the fourth seed in the Region 3D tournament, which begins at the sites of the seventh and eighth seeds on Monday. Ninth seeded Christiansburg is at eighth-seeded Abingdon and 10th-seeded Bassett will open at seven-seeded Northside.
Botetourt gets a bye Monday and will host fifth-seeded William Byrd on Tuesday night. The winner of that game will most likely take on top-seeded Carroll County on February 24 in the region semifinals.
