Lord Botetourt defeated James River in four sets last week in volleyball as both teams prepare for their region tournaments. Botetourt will open regional play either Saturday or Monday while the Knights will play Monday, both against opponents to be determined.

Last week in Springwood the Cavaliers swept the season series from River with a four-set victory, 25-11, 25-17, 18-25 and 25-19. LB’s Parker Hudson was high for the match with 15 kills and she also had a dozen digs, three blocks and a couple serving aces. Annelise Wolfe had eight kills and 13 digs for Botetourt while Nora Spickard had seven and 23. Anna Dewease led the team with 41 digs and Sydney Whorley had 26 assists to go with five aces.

For River, Ainsley Simmons has 11 kills and four blocks. Morgan Marshall had 10 kills and 17 digs and Bailey Mines had 19 assists. Rachel Harless had 18 digs and Michaela Hedrick had 15.

Michaela Hedrick (1) and Rachel Harless (3) make sure the ball doesn’t hit the floor.

The Knights were scheduled to wrap up their season on Tuesday of this week with a rescheduled match against Radford. The Region 2C tournament begins next week and River, at 1-9, will likely have a “play in” game at a site to be determined on Monday.

Botetourt is 7-4 overall and 4-4 in the Blue Ridge District after completing BRD play with a three-set win over Northside last week. The Cavaliers won 26-24, 25-20 and 25-23.

Hudson led again with a dozen kills while Wolfe had nine and Spickard had eight. Whorley had 26 assists and three aces, Dewease had 19 digs and three aces and Julianna Stephenson had five kills, seven digs and an ace.

LB finished third in the Blue Ridge standings. Franklin County beat William Byrd last Thursday to win the regular season with a 7-1 BRD record while Byrd was second at 6-2. There is no district tournament, but the region is scheduled to begin on Saturday.

“There are several in our region that are still playing so we will know our seed later this week,” said LB coach Julie Conner. “We could play Saturday or Monday.”
