Botetourt County’s two high schools went head to head in volleyball last Thursday in Springwood and Lord Botetourt came out on top, defeating host James River in three sets. The Cavaliers won 25-13, 25-14 and 25-7.

The visiting Cavaliers had 35 kills to just 15 for the Knights as the taller LB girls dominated the net. Miette Veldman had 10 kills and three blocks, Taylor Robertson had nine kills and Ryanna Clark had five kills and five blocks. Robertson also had 10 digs and Jordyn Kepler had 28 assists for the Cavaliers as LB remained undefeated after two matches.

Sage Beddingfield had six kills to lead James River. Olivia Murry had 11 assists.

The Knights played some strong competition at the Virginia Volleyball Center in Sterling on Saturday and lost three matches to some much larger schools, falling to 1-5 on the season. The Knights were scheduled to play at Covington on Tuesday.

LB was at Cave Spring on Tuesday and will have their fourth straight road game to open the season when they play at Blacksburg on Thursday of this week. The Bruins are a top Class 4 team and should give the defending Class 3 champion Cavaliers all they can handle.

Botetourt’s home opener is next Tuesday, September 10, when James River returns the trip to Daleville.
