The Lord Botetourt wrestlers concluded the regular season with a third place finish in the Big Red Invitational at Riverheads High in Staunton last Saturday. Host Riverheads, the 2022 Class A state runner-up, finished first and Strasburg, last year’s Class 2 state champ, finished second.

“We were able to get everyone that was healthy into the tournament at Riverheads as it was our last regular season event,” said LB coach Chuck Burton. “Only the top guy from each weight class will have any more matches for us so I’m glad we were able to get everyone out on the mat one last time. We had someone place in every weight class we entered and multiple weight classes where we were able to place more than one kid.”

LB had a tournament champion in TJ Piluso at 165 pounds. Trey Saunders finished second at 132 and third places went to Jack Bierce at 106, Hunter Miller at 126, Xavier Williams at 175, Drew Gilbert at 190 and Dalton Oxley at 215. LB had two fourth place finishers, Canden Saunders at 138 and Noah Williams at 144.

The Cavaliers also hosted a dual meet for “Senior Night” and took a 48-30 win over Patrick Henry. Winners for the Cavaliers included Trey Saunders at 132, Canden Saunders at 138, Gray Arnold at 144, Preston Carter at 150, Piluso at 165, Xavier Williams at 175, Drew Gilbert at 190, Oxley at 215 and Ben Gilbert at 285.

“We had a good final week of our regular season,” said Burton. “The kids are starting to turn the corner and with two weeks to prepare for Regionals, I think they will be hungry and ready.”

The Region 3D tournament will be held at Northside High on February 11.
