Three members of the Lord Botetourt High School FFA Chapter competed in the Virtual South Ridge Area Public Speaking Competition on May 14. This was a regional competition with district winners from across the South Central region of the state competing for an opportunity to represent the region in the state competition.

Representing LBHS FFA and the Mountain District in Senior Prepared Public Speaking was Faith Settle. During the Prepared Public Speaking Leadership Development Event (LDE), she presented her eight-minute speech on Agriculture Awareness in the Animal Industry and answered a series of questions posed by the judges to show her understanding and knowledge on her topic. Faith finished in first place and will represent the region at the Virtual Virginia State FFA Convention.

Representing the chapter in the Creed Speaking competition was Kirin Miller. The LDE recognizes outstanding FFA members in seventh through ninth grades for their ability to present the FFA Creed from memory and answer three questions related to it. Kirin finished in second place in the region

Reagan Hall represented the chapter in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking competition. Students participating in the event showcase their agricultural knowledge and ability to think on their feet by giving a speech and answering questions with limited prep time. Participants draw from 12 agricultural topics then select three of interest. From those three, a student selects the topic of their speech and has 30 minutes to prepare using five resources. Participants then present a four- to six-minute speech on their topic to a panel of judges. After their speech, students answer five minutes’ worth of questions on the topic they just presented. Reagan finished fourth in the region.

All of the competitors represented Lord Botetourt High School, Botetourt County and the district well, said FFA Advisor Stuart Byrd.
