Decorum non-existent at supervisors’ meeting
What kind of a society are we in anymore… ? was asked by one of the chronic complainers at the Board of Supervisors meeting last Tuesday.
What kind of society we are in anymore is not what was seen on display at a majority of that meeting during the public comment portions thereof.
Decorum at that meeting was non-existent. The chair requested several times that, for the sake of time there be no applause after each speaker, as there was much business to be conducted; however, no attention was paid to his repeated reminders. As each speaker threatened, bullied, attempted to intimidate and berated the board, the cheerleading clowns gave their round of applause anyway. Somehow, certain people just ignore the rules of conduct.
One person spoke who deserved more than applause! She thanked the board for all of their long and hard work. She aptly stated that it is not appropriate, okay or funny for any of our county officials to be threatened and stated that such conduct needs to stop. She went on to say that it is not acceptable on social media, in writing, or in symbolic ways. She stated that the board does not deserve such treatment, as no one does, and said she hated it was happening.
She went on to appropriately note that “It is idle hands and hardened hearts and simple minds that behave this way. That’s, it’s not okay, it’s not acceptable.”
She further noted that statements are brought to the meeting from the Botetourt County Republican Committee, and asked all to “please know” that those statements do not represent the entire committee and do not reflect unanimous support. When she finished, the echo of truth burst from the sound of dead silence thereafter.
Kudos to the gentleman who thanked Fire & Rescue for their recent service to him and his family. Far too often these excellent services are not given appropriate recognition.
Almost all of the chronic complainers said they were speaking for the many Botetourt County residents who can’t afford to pay more taxes, but it was easy to see through that subterfuge. They were there for one reason only, because they do not want to pay their fair share.
For any of you were not at that meeting, or did not see the live broadcast, go back and look at the tape. I submit that, after you see it, you will agree that such conduct does not represent the society in which we live. Many came here from other places where they were “disgruntled.” The problem is that they did not leave their disgruntlement behind and wish to inflict it upon us.

Thank you to Fincastle United Methodist Church
Thank you to the Fincastle United Methodist Church for the third in a series of Celebrating Fincastle’s Historic Churches sponsored by Historic Fincastle, Inc. Thanks to the community for supporting these events. The church provided a cool respite from the extreme heat and humidity for the day. This event served as a great kickoff for the 4th of July 2024 weekend.
After having a wonderful history lesson from Angela Coon on the history and current activities of the church, the Botetourt County Brass Ensemble and the choir from the church treated us all to a rousing and moving celebration of patriotic music. One of the anthems the Ensemble played was John Phillip Sousa’s “Washington Post March” that made you want to march around the sanctuary. The choir sang a touching rendition of “Let There Be Peace on Earth” as one of their selections. It brought a tear to more than one eye in attendance. The finale was the singing of “The Armed Forces Medley” and the recognition of those who have served our country in the military.
Many thanks to the Rev. Jim Bollinger, Music Director Heather Mitchell, Accompanist Mary Rae, Historian Angela Coon, and the musicians who worked very hard in preparation for this wonderful program. There was a fellowship gathering by the attendees under the historic honey locust tree afterwards. Thank you also to the people who made the cookies and lemonade. It was enjoyed by all.
The fourth and last Celebrating Fincastle’s Historic Churches will be held this fall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Stay tuned for more information and the date of this event. Thank you again.
