Letters to the Editor for June 10 edition

People are removing anti data center signs

This letter is to inform my fellow Botetourt neighbors about the nefarious actions of some people to suppress the grassroots community in the fight against the Google Data Center being built in our backyard. Anti Google Data Center yard signs are being stolen off of private property. Video evidence shows this is not teenage pranks but a concerted effort by people who obviously don’t want the truth to be told about all the negative effects that the Google Data Center would bring to our area.

A successful year for MGCC

As Mountain Gateway Community College concludes another academic year, we are proud to reflect on one of the most successful years in our institution’s recent history.

This spring, MGCC celebrated one of the largest graduating classes, awarding 643 degrees, certificates, and workforce credentials to 445 students who are preparing to make a difference in our communities and local workforce. These graduates represent the determination, resilience, and talent that define our region.

The college also experienced a remarkable 13% increase in enrollment, a positive trend that reflects growing confidence in the value and quality of a Mountain Gateway education. Students are increasingly choosing us because of our affordability, personalized support, and strong pathways to careers or four-year universities.

This year also marked the launch of our new MG-TEC Laboratory School, an innovative partnership designed to provide high school students with advanced opportunities in high-demand fields like information technology, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. This program is helping prepare the next generation of talent for the careers of tomorrow.

To better meet the needs of today’s students, MGCC is transitioning to an eight-week class format this fall, providing greater flexibility and more opportunities for students to balance college, work, and family responsibilities while accelerating their path toward graduation.

Our workforce development programs continue to grow, with increasing enrollment and expanded offerings in skilled trades, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and other critical industries. These programs help local employers address workforce shortages while creating life-changing opportunities for our students.

These accomplishments would not be possible without the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, community partners, and supporters. Together, we are building a stronger and brighter future for the Alleghany, Bath, Buena Vista, Botetourt, Covington, Lexington, and Rockbridge areas.

Dr. John J. Rainone, President
Mountain Gateway Community College
