Thanks supervisors for denying text amendment

This letter is to express our appreciation to the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors for their vote on April 26 to deny the Zoning Ordinance Text Amendment that would have created a new zoning category, “Convenience Store, Highway.” In the months leading up to the vote all board members took time to listen to their constituents, with the majority of citizens opposed to the text amendment.

As an organization of citizens in the Buchanan District, Stand Up For Botetourt is particularly grateful to Buchanan District Supervisor Amy White who spent countless hours listening to her constituents’ concerns. She made herself available to everyone in her district and beyond, regardless of where they stood on the issue. It was a real testament to her professionalism, patience and desire to serve the county.

The unanimous vote by the five board members was well reasoned as evidenced by the way they explained their vote to the public at the recent board meeting. The board showed a clear understanding of how the text amendment could pave the way for inappropriate development at our county’s interstate interchanges and they wisely chose to deny the zoning ordinance change.

Our group is confident that future development being considered at the county’s interstate interchanges will be given a thorough review by our Board of Supervisors, with the interests of the majority of citizens being the most important.
