The Lord Botetourt girls basketball team will host an improved Salem team tonight in a non-district game in Daleville. Salem is 8-4 on the season while LB came into the week at 9-1 and had a game at Franklin County on Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers opened last week with a 71-27 win at Northside. The Cavaliers had 20 steals as a team. Ally Spangler had six of the steals and got the Cavs off to a good starting by hitting all 10 of her first half shots for 21 points. Taylor Orange added 16 points and had six steals and Jada Morgan had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Grayson Alfano had a dozen points.

On Wednesday of last week, the Cavs fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 61-35 loss at Patrick Henry. The Cavs committed 28 turnovers and gave up 26 points off the turnovers while shooting 31 percent from the field.

“Our guards, other than Ally, are sophomores and freshmen,” said coach Renee Favaro. “I think our lack of experience really showed against the length and size of PH’s defense and we committed far too many turnovers to come away with a win. We also did not do a very good job locating shooters, as PH shot 48 percent from three on us.”

On Friday the Cavs bounced back with a 46-44 win over William Fleming. It wasn’t a masterpiece, but Favaro will take it.

“An ugly win,” she said. “We gave up 20 offensive rebounds, committed 25 turnovers and only shot 26 percent and were lucky enough to walk away with a win, thanks to William Fleming shooting only six for 25 from the free throw line.”

Spangler led with 13 and Orange added 11.

“We actually played all three of these games last week without being able to practice at all due to the weather,” said Favaro. “However, that is no excuse for the way we played the final two games of the week. We have to be much better taking care of the ball, shooting, and keeping people off the offensive boards if we plan to complete and get wins this week.”

After tonight’s home game with Salem the girls are at Staunton River on Friday, then play a makeup game with Abingdon at home on Saturday evening.
