Lord Botetourt indoor track team competes outside at William Byrd

The weather was balmy but tolerable for December when William Byrd High School played host to a “Polar Bear Meet” on the Patterson Stadium track in Vinton last week. Glenvar, Northside and Lord Botetourt host William Byrd for the meet.

For the girls, Ella Johnston won the 1,600 with a time of 6:28.69 with Falan Peters finishing third. Second places went to Wren Duckworth in the 500 and Maddie Malue in the 55 hurdles, with Jillian Harris and Nicole Paquette taking fourth and fifth in the hurdles. Karley Burks was fourth in the 1,000 meter run and Alexa Carillo took fifth in the 55 meter dash.

The boys had five first place finishers, including the 4×200 relay. The foursome of KJ Bratton, Joey Isaacs, Zion Woody and Cade Lang ran a time of 1:37.41 to win the race.

Bratton also won the 55 meters and set a new school record with a time of 6.68. Isaacs finished second at 6.75, also breaking the previous record, and Lang was fifth.

Lang took first in the long jump, covering 18’8” as the Cavaliers took the top four spots in that event. Dylan Knick was second, Elijah Rose was third and Jahki Emmons-Mayo took fourth. Rose also won the high jump, clearing 5’6”.

Cole Stelter won the 500 meter run in 1:15.61 and was second in the 1,600. Nathan Badgley was first in the shot put at 32’11” with Riley Rothwell taking third.

Other top five finishers at Byrd included Emmons-Mayo with a second in the triple jump, Knick with a second in the 300, Jacob Malue with a fifth in the 1000 meters and three top five finishers in the 3,200-meter run with Evan Gates taking second, Carter Hudson third and Tristan Dodson fifth.
