JoAnn Beamer Merchant, 81, passed away on November 20, 2023, in Roanoke.
Fondly known as “JoJo” by her beloved grandchildren, JoAnn was a strong, caring fixture in their young lives. She may be best remembered as the owner and operator of JoAnn’s School of Dance in the heart of Fincastle during the 1980s and 1990s. She influenced many young people during her time there.
JoAnn loved walking in the woods, where she enjoyed nature in all its forms, and was especially fond of trips to the beach, where she collected seashells and loved to watch the sunset.
She was a caring person who took care of everyone around her, but especially those she loved. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary D. Merchant; her father, James E. Beamer, Sr.; mother, Celia Cartwright Beamer; father-in-law, Walter Merchant; and mother-in-law, Lois Francis Merchant.
JoAnn is survived by her husband, Marion “Pete” Abbitt; brother, James E. Beamer, Jr.; daughter, Sheryl G. Merchant; son, Gary Jason Merchant (Brandy); and her grandchildren, Lyla A. Merchant and London J. Merchant.
