Wissman, Wesley G.

Wesley G. “Wes” Wissman, 80, of Botetourt, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Wes was born March 29, 1940 in Toledo, Ohio and was the son of the late Bertram O. and Edith I. Barry Wissman.  He lived in Maryland most of his life before moving to Botetourt County in 2010.

Wes was a Certified Master Mechanic for Budget Rent-a-Car for 30 years and served in The United States Coast Guard. He was an active member of Fincastle Baptist Church and enjoyed rebuilding and restoring cars. He had a love for Fords and restored or rebuilt a Mustang and Fairlane. Wes was active in drag racing and drove the “Thundering Turtle.”  He entered and drove in many demolition derbies. He had a fantastic sense of humor and enjoyed being part of the Clown Club at his Moose Lodge. Wes was also the “Honorary” Fire Queen in Aden, Va.

In addition to his parents, Wes was preceded in death by his wife Betty L. Liskey Wissman; and son, Lionel Wissman.  He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda Marie and Tim Smith of Fincastle and Glenda Irene and Bernie Moyer of Winchester; four grandchildren, Sharron (Chuck) Vass, Kelsey Wheaton, Christine Moyer, and Stephen Moyer; two great-grandchildren, Reagan Moyer and Noah Vass; brother and sister-in-law, Bert and Barbara Wissman of Yucca Valley, Calif.

A celebration of a life well lived was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2 at Fincastle Baptist Church, 7330 Roanoke Road, Fincastle with Pastor Kevin Cummings officiating. A private burial will be Wednesday at Valley View Cemetery in Nokesville, Va. The family received friends at the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday. For those with concerns regarding COVID-19 and social distancing, and out-of-town folks, the service was livestreamed at www.facebook.com/Wesley.Wissman/.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Fincastle Baptist Church Youth Center, P.O. Box 707, Fincastle, 24090.

Online condolences may be made to the family at www.rader-funeralhome.com.
