Motorists traveling along Interstate 81 near mile marker 149 this week may notice a visible flame rising near Tinker Mountain Road, but county officials say there is no cause for alarm.
Botetourt County officials announced Monday that Roanoke Gas Company has begun a planned and controlled gas flare as part of routine maintenance on its natural gas system. The work started Monday, May 4, and is expected to continue for approximately 10 days during daylight hours.
According to the county, the flaring process is being used to safely inspect a section of the pipeline. Crews will remain on-site throughout the operation to monitor conditions and ensure safety.
Officials emphasized that the activity is expected and poses no disruption to customers. Natural gas service will not be interrupted during the maintenance period.
Residents and commuters in the area, particularly along nearby roadways, may see the flame, which could be noticeable from a distance. County officials said the visibility of the flare is a normal part of the process and does not indicate an emergency.
Additional information about ongoing work by Roanoke Gas is available on the company’s website.
County officials encouraged the public to remain aware but reassured that the situation is fully controlled and being closely supervised.
