Owen Prince, a Lord Botetourt High School graduate who played baseball at Virginia Military Institute, has signed a contract to play in the Major League Baseball Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Owen is currently in Bradenton, Fla., at the Pirates’ spring training facility and will be playing in some controlled games for a few weeks hoping to get moved to their low A team, which is also in Bradenton.
Owen, who played for LB with his twin brother Nate, hit .403 as a Cavalier senior in the spring of 2022. He was a catcher for Lord Botetourt and split time between catcher and the outfield at VMI as a freshman and sophomore. He was strictly a centerfielder as a junior in 2025 and was third nationally with 46 stolen bases.
This past spring, as a senior, Owen was named to the Preseason All-SoCon second-team as an outfielder, collected SoCon All-Defensive Team honors and led the conference with 29 stolen bases to rank in the top 10 in program history. He scored a team-high 62 runs to rank in the top 10 in single-season history, reached base safely a record-tying 43 straight games and led the team with three triples. Owen had 19 multi-hit games while slashing .307/.371/.444 with 63 hits.
For his four-year career Prince ranks first in program history with 103 stolen bases, second with a .457 on-base clip, fourth with 173 runs and 132 walks, and 10th with 34 hit by pitches.
Owen is the son of former LB baseball standout Bobby Prince and wife Karen. His brother Nate played baseball for Roanoke College.
