The Region 2C soccer tournaments are scheduled to open today with the James River boys at home and the girls headed to Appomattox.

Both tournaments include 16 teams with two “sub-regions” of eight teams each. River is the fourth seed in their bracket and the Knights will host fifth seeded Nelson County tonight at 6 p.m. The winner will take on top-seeded Glenvar on Friday night at a time to be determined. Sub-region finals are Tuesday, May 31, and the two sub-region winners will meet for the Region 2C championship on June 2. Sub-region finals and the championship game are both scheduled to be played at the Smith River Complex in Martinsville.

The James River girls are the fifth seed in their sub-region and they’ll be headed to Appomattox for the opening round tonight. The winner will be at top-seeded Alleghany on Friday and, like the boys, sub-region finals and the championship game will be held at the Smith River Complex on May 31 and June 2.

The girls have not played since May 16 but the boys had one last regular season game last Wednesday against Radford. The Bobcats used a big second half to win that one, 4-1.

“We outplayed them in possession but made several untimely mistakes and they capitalized on them with goals,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “I like the effort we showed and the control soccer we played but now we have to eliminate the mistakes. From here on out we have to have it all together or season will end for us. We plan to just take it game by game and try to shore up our weaknesses.”
