The James River boys will be looking to pull an upset when they travel to Glenvar tonight for a Three Rivers District soccer game. The Highlanders are the defending Class 2 state champions and they’re still undefeated after 11 games this spring.
Meanwhile, the Knights dropped two district games in the past week to Alleghany and Carroll County. Last Thursday at Alleghany the host Cougars took a 5-1 win with Brayden Forbes scoring River’s goal, assisted by Josiah Clark.
“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong,” said River coach Jared Whiting. “We moved the ball well at times but were not consistent with it. We did play some good soccer but it seemed like Lady Luck was against us. It probably should have been a tight game but the score sure doesn’t show it.”
On Monday the Knights hosted Carroll County and dropped a 3-1 decision. Clark scored River’s goal with an assist from Cayden Hoyt.
“Another frustrating game,” said Whiting. “I’m proud of these guys for how they played. I feel we were the better team with ball movement and control but they were better at finishing.
“Overall it was a great game, just not the results we were looking for. We’ll keep working hard and hit the field Wednesday against the defending state champs.”
