The James River Knights will have a first round bye when the Region 2C baseball tournament opens tonight, then take on the winner of a first round game between Glenvar and Alleghany on Friday.

Game time is set for 5 p.m. Friday in Springwood as the second seeded Knights will meet one of two Three Rivers District rivals. Alleghany is the third seed and Glenvar is sixth in one of two eight-team “sub-region” brackets.

Friday’s winner will advance to the sub-region final on Memorial Day at Radford University, beginning at 7:30 p.m. It will follow a game between the survivors of the other sub-region, and the two winners will meet on Thursday, June 2, for the Region 2C championship.

The Knights come into the tournament with an overall record of 13-7 after a come-from-behind win over Radford in the regular season final last Wednesday. The Knights trailed 5-3 into the bottom of the sixth but scored three runs for a 6-5 win.

Jonas Wilkes started on the mound for the Knights but gave up five runs and was replaced by Heath Andrews with one out in the third inning. Andrews pitched four and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball to pick up the win, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out seven. He fanned the last two Bobcats with the potential tying run on base.

River had eight hits, including two each by John Austin and Logan Campbell. Six different Knights scored and six different Knights drove in runs in the come-from-behind win.
