The James River girls have a first round bye in the Region 2C soccer tournament, so they won’t play a region game until Memorial Day. River will face the winner of a first round game between Giles and Floyd.
The Knights finished the regular season at 11-4-1 after winning at Carroll County last Thursday, 4-2. That followed a 3-0 loss at Radford the night before.
“Tired from the battle the night before, we were comparatively slow in the first half before coming around in the second,” said coach Bill Smith.
The home Cavaliers scored early with an impressive drive, culminating in a hard-driven shot from Kaylei Newman, assisted by Adrienne Harris in the second minute of play. The Knights recovered, and the play was balanced, if not awe inspiring, for the balance of the first half.
Riley Potter scored for the Knights, assisted by Rachael Hix, at the midpoint of the half. With 17 minutes on the clock in the second half Megan Hill converted a PK to put the Knights in the lead. The Cavs tied the game at 2-2 but Rachael Hix scored for the Knights with four minutes remaining with an assist from Kayla Myers. Then, with two minutes left in the match, Hill finished another PK after a bit of a scrum in the Carroll County goal.
