The Region 2C basketball tournament will open at home sites this Friday with the James River girls expecting to be on the road. The Knights were 10-12 overall with one game to play prior to the region opener.
River was scheduled to play at Carroll County on Tuesday in the regular season finale, but results were too late for publication. The Knights were hoping to break a four-game losing streak, all against Three Rivers District teams.
Last week the girls lost at Floyd, 51-33, home to Radford, 72-49, and home to Patrick County, 34-30. On Monday they were at Martinsville and lost 60-47 despite 14 points each by Audrey Benson and Jalen Thompson. River led 14-13 after the first quarter but were outscored by the Bulldogs, 20-10, in the second quarter and never caught up.
If the Knights win their region opener on Friday they would play in the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The region championship is Feb. 27.
