James River High School will be the site of the Region 2C wrestling tournament this Saturday. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. and the top three in each weight class advance to the state Class 2 tournament at the Salem Civic Center on February 16 and 17.

There will be 11 teams competing in the region tournament in Springwood Saturday. The tournament will run straight through and take up most of the day.

Last week the Knights played host to the Three Rivers District tournament and finished fourth as a team. Alleghany won the championship with 161 points, edging second place Patrick County with 157. Glenvar was third with 149.5 and River had 109. The rest of the district had Radford at 77.5, Carroll County at 54 points and Floyd County brought up the rear with 31.5.

River entered 10 wrestlers in the tournament and seven placed, including three champions. At 106, Xaiden Wynn improved his season record to 25-2 with a pin and a forfeit win in the final. Wynn has not lost to a Class 2 opponent all season.

At 120, Brayden Forbes remained unbeaten after 28 bouts. He pinned Hayden Wills of Alleghany in 3:06 to win his championship final.

At 138, Nate Stewart improved his record to 22-3. He pinned Haiden Nicely of Alleghany in the final in three minutes flat for the championship.

Caiden Martin finished second at 113 and three Knights took thirds, Ryan Daniels at 132, Efraim Echavarria at 150 and Jayden Alston at 175.

Everyone from the district gets to participate in this week’s regional tournament, but only the top three advance to state.
