School Board recognizes students’ achievements

Earlier this month, at the Botetourt County School Board meeting, the board handed out recognitions to local students who gave exceptional performances in sports and studies.

James River High School’s Class 2 indoor track team members were recognized for their State Championship win in the 4x200m relay. Students Holly Hylton, Vanessa Lima, Morgan Marshall, and Ella Wright received their certificates of recognition. Lima and Hylton were also recognized for their victories in the 55-meter dash and long jump.

The 2021 Division Spelling Bee Champion Sonny Sharp from Eagle Rock Elementary School received her award, and Greenfield Elementary’s Holly Weddle represented Botetourt County as the alternate during regional competition.

Six Botetourt County students received awards recognition for their Roanoke Valley Governor’s School Project Forum performances. Shannon Filer from James River won first place in the Earth and Environmental Science category. Kierstyn Stanley and Sydney Vokus of Lord Botetourt received first place honors in Engineering Mechanics A. LB’s Chloe Beasley, and Parker Houston won first place in Engineering Mechanics B. Ethan Fouch of Lord Botetourt won first place in Engineering Mechanics C. And LB student Aidan Mayhue won first place in Plant Sciences.

The board recognized five students from Lord Botetourt who recently came away with the 2021 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Allison Pully won the National Gold Medal and American Visions Medal. Halle Reese won the National Silver Medal and Regional Gold Key. Jillian Davis won the Regional Gold Key. Riley Tetreault won two Regional Silver Keys and an Honorable Mention with Leeanne Wood, who also received a Regional Honorable Mention.
