The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office wants to inform residents of recent fraudulent activity in which subjects are using sheriff’s office phone numbers and stating they are law enforcement personnel.
Lt. Jeff Stritesky said a local resident received a call at work advising her she had missed jury duty. The caller went on to state she was subject to arrest and required to post bail. The victim was given specific instructions to report to the jail and to remain on the phone while in transit. While in transit, the victim was instructed to purchase prepaid cards for payment of bail.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens that no one from the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office will call and demand payment over the phone or computer. Should you have any question or doubt, stop and call your local sheriff or police department.
