Some people chase fleeting pleasures, building castles in the sand. Others create enduring legacies, leaving footprints that stand the test of time.
Curtis Odell Simmons of Daleville passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on April 19, 1931, in Kimball, W.Va., Curtis lived a long and fruitful life marked by strong resolve, unyielding drive, and love for his family.
Curtis proudly served in the United States Navy for four years. After his service, he worked briefly at the Shipyard and Ford Motor Company in Norfolk. It was in Norfolk where he began his family with his beloved wife of 72 years, Phyllis Sink Simmons.
In 1954, Curtis moved to the Roanoke Valley and embarked on a 25-year career with Norfolk & Western Railway as a machinist. Always a tinkerer and one who was gifted in working with his hands, his love of construction led him to work as a home builder and developer in Roanoke and Botetourt counties for over 40 years.
Although widely known and loved for his quick wit and sense of humor, Curtis will forever be remembered for his tireless work ethic and hardworking nature. From entrepreneur to craftsman to mechanic, he dreamed big dreams and lived life well; his legacy is one of resilience, determination, and success.
Along with his wife Phyllis, he is survived by his children, Deborah (Mike) Wiley and Steve (Beth) Simmons of Daleville, Curtis (Sandy) Simmons Jr. of Roanoke, Sharon (Mike) Ostler of Marietta, S.C., and Julie (Jon) Gibson of Savannah, Ga.
He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kimberly Wyrick and her son, Austin, of Daleville; Bobby (Ranelle) Simmons and their children, James, Bella, and Berkeley of Fincastle; Jonathan Simmons of Troutville; Olivia (CJ) Boothe of Daleville; Nathaniel (Kanon) Simmons and their children, Dorothy and June, of Macclenny, Fla.; Naomi (Andrew) Glenn and their children, Madeline, Oliver, Lucy, Eloise, Penelope, and Silas of Germantown, Md.; and Abigail, Ella, Will, and Joshua Gibson of Savannah, Ga.
Also surviving are his brother, Richard (Anita) Simmons; his sister, Rose Cox, all of Buchanan; sister-in-law, Judy Hancock of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews.
Curtis was predeceased by a son, Clayton Simmons; a granddaughter, Cori Saunders; his parents, Vern “Bane” and Annie Simmons; and his brothers, Sherman and Charles “Butch” Simmons.
Curtis’ memory will live forever in the hearts of his family and all who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
A Celebration of Life Service took place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Oakey’s East Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Simmons officiating. Burial took place immediately following the service in Mill Creek Cemetery. The family received friends on Monday, March 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Oakey’s East Chapel; (540) 977-3909.
