While many families gathered for cookouts and holiday celebrations on Independence Day, Sirens and Salutes made sure the first responders working to keep their communities safe also had a chance to enjoy a meal.
The local nonprofit sponsored three food trucks Friday to provide free lunches to first responders across the region, serving those on duty at the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, the Roanoke City Jail, and the Salem Western Regional Jail.
Late morning and into the early afternoon, law enforcement officers, correctional officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and dispatchers were invited to stop by and order meals at no cost.
The effort was designed to accommodate those whose duties prevented them from taking a break. Employees who could not leave their posts were able to place to-go orders for co-workers, ensuring entire shifts had an opportunity to eat. Organizers also prepared additional meals and set them aside for night shift personnel reporting for duty later in the day.
“We’re honored to help take care of those protecting our communities while we celebrate the holiday with our families,” said Bill Price of Sirens and Salutes.
