Fincastle has been awarded $1,244,642 through Virginia’s Community Development Block Grant program to fund improvements to its historic downtown, including building facade restoration, streetscape upgrades, and new signage.

The funding will support the Fincastle Historic District Revitalization 2026 project. Fincastle was one of 17 Virginia communities selected for funding this year, according to an announcement by Mayor Mary Bess Smith.

“Fincastle’s downtown is more than just a collection of buildings — it’s the heart of who we are as a town,” Town Manager Melanie McFadyen said in a statement provided by Smith. “This grant gives us the chance to protect that history while making sure our downtown stays vibrant and welcoming for the next generation.”

McFadyen discussed the award during the Oct. 8 Town Council meeting, telling council members the town received the full amount requested in an application submitted in July.

“We got everything we asked for,” McFadyen said.

More than half of the grant will support facade improvements to downtown buildings. Approximately $365,000 is designated for streetscape improvements, while another $85,000 will support wayfinding plans and initial implementation, including signage directing visitors to Fincastle’s historic destinations.

The improvements are intended to preserve the character of the historic district while making downtown more welcoming for residents and visitors. Town officials also discussed how the facade program could encourage new businesses to locate downtown, including a potential requirement that participating property owners open a public-facing business within approximately three to five years.

The funding is not expected to become available until early 2027.

McFadyen credited Amanda McGee and regional partners for helping prepare the application.

The award represents a significant investment in the town’s historic commercial district, with projects expected to address building appearances, pedestrian-oriented streetscape improvements, and signage to help visitors navigate downtown.
