Track teams compete at Lord Botetourt, William Byrd

The Lord Botetourt and James River track teams competed in two meets last week. LB hosted a meet in Daleville on Wednesday, April 9, and both county teams competed at William Byrd last Saturday.

Botetourt’s first home meet included 10 teams. Highlights for the LB girls team included a first place finish in the 100 hurdles by Jillian Harris and a first in the 3200 by Ember Wiley. Harris also took second in the long jump while Ratie Jenson was second in the high jump.

For the boys, Triston Graves won the 100 and 200 meters, Preston Vaughn won the 1,600 and Eric Duncan won the 3200. Nathan Mullens won the pole vault.

Kaia Binns swept the 100 and 200 dashes for the River girls while Denver Rinehart was runner-up in the 200. Navaeh VanBuren was second in the discus.

Gavin Binns took second in both the 100 and 200 for the River boys at LB. Jayden Alston and Jack Beheler were one-two in the discus and Alston was second in the shot put. Braden Jones took second in the 3200 and third in the 800.

On Saturday 23 schools competed in the “Terrier Team Challenge” on a cold day in Vinton. LB’s Caleb Miller broke the school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.77 and Graves was third, with both qualifying for states.

Botetourt’s distance medley team of Kamden Umber, Duncan, Vaughn, and Joel Butler broke the school record by almost 10 seconds. Eric Duncan placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:04.43

For the girls, Harris qualified for states in the 100 hurdles.

River’s best finish at Byrd was a third in the shot put by Alston and Beheler state qualified in the discus. The girls 4×100 team of Rhaya Kitt, Binns, Samaya Osborne and Rinehart was fourth.

This Saturday the Knights are headed to Hidden Valley for a meet while LB will competing at Emory & Henry.
