The heartwarming holiday show “Papa’s Angels” opens this week at the D. Geraldine Lawson Performing Arts Theater just south of Fincastle.

The play is Attic Productions’ annual Christmas show and it runs the next two weekends, Thursdays-Saturdays, Dec. 2-5 and 10-12.

Cast members from “Papa’s Angels” rehearse for the show that opens this week. From left are Cedar Moore as Alvin, Lee Bowman as John Neal, John Barton as Papa, Annie Quesinberry as Hannah-Rose, Ariyana Carter as Maude and Casey Barton as Becca.

“Papa’s Angels” will take the audience back to 1935 and the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina to visit the Jenkins family. Papa Jenkins, known through the hills as “Grins,” is a man whose guitar playing and singing is known far and wide.

With a loving wife and five outgoing children, life is perfect until tragedy threatens to forever darken the Jenkins family. Ultimately, it’s the innocence that only children possess that makes healing possible. Attending this touching show is the perfect way to start the holiday season.

John Lawson directs the play that was written by Collin Wilcox Paxton in collaboration with Charles Jones. Music is by John Roman, with arrangements by Phyllis Dunne.

Curtains are at 7:30 p.m. each evening with 2:30 p.m. matinees on both Saturdays (although both matinees are almost sold out. There are plenty of seats for the evening performances).

Tickets are $10 for senior citizens and students and $12 for adults. Group rates are available for groups of 10 or more.

Reservations are recommended and may be made by calling the ticket office at 473-1001 and leaving a name and phone number. Someone will call you back. Usual ticket office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 3-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The D. Geraldine Lawson Performing Arts Theater is located at 7490 Roanoke Road, (US 11) just south of Fincastle.

Season tickets and gift certificates are now available and may be purchased at the ticket office during show intermissions and before shows. Season tickets are $60 for adults and $50 for seniors and students. Kroger gift cards also are available.
