The James River boys soccer team will put their undefeated record on the line Friday when they play host to Class 3 Rockbridge in Springwood. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
The boys are 3-0 after a 6-3 win at Riverheads last week. River was scheduled to play at Rockbridge last Friday but that game was postponed due to inclement weather.
The girls were home against Rockbridge last Friday and they managed to get that game in, falling 6-2 to the visiting Wildcats. River was playing with a roster of just 12 girls.
The Knights opened the scoring with Drew Whitson scoring off an assist from Konner Meyers in the opening 10 minutes. Madelyn Jones equalized for the Wildcats three minutes later and Rockbridge went ahead shortly after from another Jones goal and one from Sophia Vaught.
Whitson and Myers combined again to close the lead to 3-2 with 15 minutes remaining in the half but two more goals from Jones brought the halftime score line to 5-2 in Rockbridge’s favor. Jones then added her fifth goal of the night in the second half for the final countdown. Kylee Aaron have 15 saves in goal for the home Knights.
The girls also played at Riverheads last week and fell 5-3. Ava Thacker, Meyers and Victoria Race-Waller scored goals for James River. The game was tied at 3-3 with four minutes remaining but the Gladiators hit the net twice in the closing minutes for the win. Aaron had a busy night in goal, making 20 saves.
The 0-2 River girls will be looking for their first win next Tuesday when they return from spring break with a game against Eastern Montgomery in Elliston. A game originally scheduled for this Friday at Rockbridge has been postponed.
