The Northside Vikings edged James River, one goal to nil, in a girls’ soccer battle in Springwood last Wednesday.
“The evening was hot, but this did not seem to slow the players down,” said River coach Bill Smith. “The match was high energy from the start.”
The home team had more of the ball and had many attacking opportunities in the first half but failed to convert. Both keepers were busy with 14 saves each in a scoreless first half.
The second half was more of the same. A couple of very close calls by the Knights would come back to haunt the James River team. Then, with three minutes on the clock, a strong break by Sarah Love for Northside managed to elude the James River defense to close in for a point-blank finish and the only score of the game as River fell to 3-4 on the season.
Rhaya Kitt had 24 total saves on the night for the Knights, who were scheduled to host Patrick County Tuesday of this week. This Friday the girls will host Carroll County.
