James River’s Ava Thacker goes up for spike as Christina Ellis (4) and Emma Rice (6) of LB set up a block.

Both the James River and Lord Botetourt volleyball teams will be on the court Thursday for key district matches. James River will host Glenvar while Lord Botetourt goes to Franklin County.

The Knights had seven days off after hosting Lord Botetourt in a match on September 19, won in three sets by the Cavaliers. River was scheduled to return to action Tuesday with a match at Floyd and Thursday Glenvar comes to Springwood. The Highlanders are undefeated and defending Class 2 state champions.

Lord Botetourt had a great run last week. After winning at James River the Cavaliers opened Blue Ridge District play with victories over William Byrd in Daleville and at Northside last Thursday.

Against Byrd the Cavaliers won in three sets, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-14. Becca Huddleston led the Cavs with nine kills and six blocks. Nora Spickard had seven kills, three blocks and 13 digs while Erica Gergely had four kills and 13 digs. Skylar Morris dished out 27 assists for the Cavaliers.

On Thursday at Northside, LB won in three sets again, 25-15, 25-14 and 25-17. Huddleston had 10 kills in this one while Spickard and Emma Rice had seven each. Morris had 27 assists, seven digs and two kills.

The three wins lifted Lord Botetourt to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the district. LB was scheduled to host William Fleming on Tuesday of this week but results were too late for publication.
