LB’s Miette Veldman hits a spike against Northside in the Blue Ridge championship game.

Botetourt County is the home of champions in high school volleyball. Both the Lord Botetourt and James River teams won district championships last week and are looking to advance to state play in regional tournaments this week.

LB opened Group 3A, Region 3D play on Monday with an easy three-set win over Magna Vista. The Cavaliers remained unbeaten after 26 matches by winning 25-10, 25-7 and 25-8 in Daleville.

Miette Veldman had 17 kills to lead LB, and sister Lara Veldman had nine kills, eight digs and three aces. Scottie Cook had three kills and four blocks, Kenleigh Gunter had 11 digs and Jordyn Kepler dished out 42 assists.

The Cavaliers advanced to the semifinal round Tuesday at Hidden Valley against Abingdon. Host Hidden Valley was set to play Tunstall in the other semifinal, and the winners will play at Hidden Valley Thursday for the Region 3D championship.

James River (20-5) had a first round bye in the Group 2A, Region C tournament. River was scheduled to join the action for Tuesday’s quarterfinals against Dan River, in Springwood. Other quarterfinal matches had Chatham at Appomattox, Radford at Nelson County and Glenvar at Giles.

Semifinals are Thursday at the sites of the higher seeds and James River would be the host team if the Knights won on Tuesday. They would play the winner of Tuesday’s game between Giles and Glenvar.

The championship match is Saturday at the site of the higher seed. Appomattox is the top seed, so if the Raiders are still alive they would be the host. If River is in the championship and anyone but Appomattox is the opponent, River would host.

The champion and runner-up teams in all classifications advance to the three round state tournaments. The tournaments begin at the sites of the Region champions on November 11 with semifinals at the highest remaining seeds on November 14. All state championship matches will be at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond on November 18.

LB and James River both won their district championship last week. LB defeated Northside in the Blue Ridge final at William Fleming High School, 25-18, 25-9 and 25-15. Miette and Lara Veldman combined for 31 kills and Kepler had 43 assists.

James River beat Giles in the Three Rivers final in Springwood, 25-16, 25-11 and 25-16. Linsey Bailey had 22 kills and Michaela Tolley had 16 kills and four aces.
