George Edward “Eddie” Whiteside Sr., 89, of Buchanan, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Beulah Whiteside; sisters, Shirley Fitzgerald, Vivian Nicely, and Jean Edwards.
He was a member of the former Cedar Bluff Baptist Church holding different positions over the years. He had retired from VDOT as assistant resident engineer with over 30 years of service. Prior to taking the position in Salem, he worked at the Lexington and Fancy Hill offices as maintenance superintendent. He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 55 years, Edith Thompson Whiteside; son, Eddie Whiteside Jr.; daughters and son-in-law, Debbie and Roger Cadd, and Patti Thomas; grandchildren, Brian and Heather Cadd, Tara and Michael Shanks; great-grandchildren, Mina and William Cadd; siblings and spouses, Charlene and Lewis Falls, Dottie Whiteside, Emily and Richard Nuchols, and Phyllis and Roy Staton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Medi Home Hospice, especially Laura and Bridget for their loving care over the last several weeks.
Visitation was held from 1-2 p.m. with services at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. David Bane officiating. Interment was in Oxford Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the American Heart Association.
