The Wilson Memorial girls and Maggie Walker boys won Class 2 state track championships on a rainy day in Elkton Saturday. James River was 12th among the girls and 20th in the boys meet at East Rockingham High School.
“The weather was terrible, it rained all day,” said River coach Greg Dyer. “It was far from ideal conditions.”
River’s Katelyn Wiley and Erin Walker had the best finishes of the day among the local athletes, both taking seconds. Wiley was nipped at the wire in the 300 hurdles and Walker was runner-up in the 100 dash.
Erin also took a fourth in the 200, while Susan Schulz was eighth in the high jump. Walker, Schulz, Wiley and Vanessa Lima joined forces to finish fourth in the 4×100 relay.
In the boys meet Ian Hester took fourth in the 300 hurdles and Will Fowler placed eighth in the 1600. The 4×800 relay team of Fowler, Cole Miller, Camden Powell and Zach Hodges took fourth.
River graduated just two girls and three boys from this year’s team, so hopes are high for next year.
“Hopefully, we can get some better numbers,” said Dyer. “This was our shallowest team in a long time.”
